Personal Issues of Men and Women

A few days ago I wrote about a personal issue between me and a partner of 21 years.

My sad details are irrelevant but the important part was the “mechanism” of relationships, including how to start them, nurture them, and end them. Obviously my current concern is the end, but let’s not lose sight of The Start. A dating website has discussion groups entitled “Who should make the first move?” and “Should you wait for him to ask the first question?” Hm. As a young man, wondering how to start things never came up: I dove in without regard for personal safety.

Now, in the senior years, many of us are not only unsure of how to make the first move, but also unsure if we should. Are we allowed? Is it proper? These questions can still be answered with the exuberance of youth: Dive right in. Most seniors still won’t, but consider the option: waiting? The object of your interest may die before you get up the nerve.

Nurturing a relationship would take too long to explain and I’m not the best at it, anyway. This last was the longest ever, and it still did not last. We’ll talk nurturing, later.

But The End…in years of my own personal relationships, and those of close friends, The End is never simple, never easy. The Christian concept of forgiveness adds to the problem. Many a female in my past was in relationship characterized by mistreatment but kept forgiving, kept enduring. Is that wrong?

In discussing human problems we allow for the spectrum of human behavior, but in this discussion we will only deal with the “two people who truly love each” other scenario, the one where both–over many years–collect and pile up small injustices until they become a molehill. Eventually, one of the participant’s molehill becomes a mountain and a “switch is flipped”, which cannot be “unflipped”. The one with the flipped switch then needs to exit, to find relief, to find something new, find greener grass. The remaining partner never understands because the remaining partner looks at their molehill and wonders “I put up with theirs, why can’t he/she/them put up with mine?” The defining characteristic of this ending is that both departed and remaining partners think they are right, think they are the victims, and are the aggrieved. The worst case scenario for intelligent, well-meaning people.

Yes, I’ve experienced this, but been there for many others, male and female, when it happened. In reality, neither is really wrong, but friends and family take sides, anyway, and then…well, anything can happen. It doesn’t help to mention to all the “two sides to every story” nugget. It doesn’t help to say time will heal everything, either. With this ending, both sides suffer, and have unresolved questions about why. And sometimes unresolved questions cause irrational acts. Ugh. Again, everyone suffers. And the two actor’s communication falls apart, ending all hope.

Maybe this ending is an American thing. Maybe our rich and powerful drug companies could develop a pill for endings/divorce that wipes out memory and leaves both participants with a clean slate. It would be a moneymaker.

But it is life. Having The End happen is not new, but to have it happen at a senior age is. The “time will heal all wounds” becomes irrelevant. Moot. Much like seniors.

It is still life, but a new kind, an unexplored territory with a definite horizon in the foreseeable future, for both of us.

Time to dive right in.

Tuesday Morning Wha’??

On Tuesday morning, October 8, 2024, God (Of any denomination) saw fit to install a rainbow outside the balcony of my apartment. It was awesome. Spectacular. Divine. It was full size and the entire arc of its beautiful design could be traced with my finger. I took lots of pics and videos but mainly stood there, jaw dropped, while the camera clicked away. The rainbow was so bright…and it had a partner. The second rainbow ran parallel to the first for most of the arc of the first, but didn’t have enough oomph to make it all the way. For moment I felt bad for the second, but then remembered There’s Two rainbows outside my window!

Never, ever have I witnessed two rainbows at once. Not in over 72 years filled with rainstorms, morning afters, and weather catastrophes. Never. even after Our Tornado this summer.

The colorful entities filled me with a sense of wonder lasting hours, and never fully dissipated until after the hours of rain the rainbows had presaged. There was a feeling of satisfaction, too, that someone, somewhere, felt I deserved not one, but two morning rainbows. My life on earth is being monitored and appreciated. The Boss had noticed my work!

A reason the awe and wonder faded was as the morning went along, I talked with others and they, too, had seen two rainbows…just before the rains. I wasn’t the only one….

Who cares about the others? The rainbows were there for me. The ‘Bows became a sign, an omen, to me. The rainbows were a delight, a blessing, a message to remember what’s important in life, and not stoop to cheating, lying, and taking advantage of others in our modern, self-centered world. And to remember to be happy with enough, and not long for too much more than what we need.

Then, another thing happened: contentment washed over me and settled in my pockets, my hair, and all the horizontal surface areas of my body. Even up my freshly plucked nose and recently shaved ears. I felt it burrow into my beard. It was going to be around for awhile. I wasn’t going to shower, ever.

As with the rest of you, there is a lot going on in our lives. Whatever it is, whatever bothers us, it’s nice to know a rainbow (or two) can make it all go away…for a day or two.

Why? Whyyyyy?

I was confronted with the worst thing imaginable, yesterday. Worse than The Calamities. Worse than another Yankee loss in the Playoffs. Even worse than–yes–my hair finally turning gray.

A now former, well-thought of friend sent a picture of my new born family from over 50 years ago. It was not asked for, not deserved, and not accepted with the grace and humility you’d expect from the mature me. It’s very existence threatened my contentment and fostered ill—

Who am I kidding…it was really cool to see a snapshot of what life was like 5 decades ago, before smart phones, before the internet, when a car could still be repaired with pliers and a crescent wrench, two adjustable tools with the power to screw or unscrew the world! (“Screw the world” was a slogan from the the radical 60s, a fact unrelated to the featured, fantastically flexible tools.)

The feigned umbrage was the first immediate response to viewing the pic when the mind was shocked into asking “Who in this whole, wide, wonderfully alliterative world wants to add to its suffering by reminding me of the time when the bulk of life was in the visor of my Easy Rider motorcycle helmet, not in the rear view mirror of those cars I used to be able to fix. What was this dubious friend’s endgame, the destruction of my carefully crafted contentment? (Apologies for show-off alliteration?)

It only took moments, however, for the swing of the mind, the arc of reason, to return to how grateful I was to make it through those younger years without major health, romantic, intellectual, and sexual disasters. It was dumb luck kept me free from DWIs, unwanted pregnancies, severe financial losses, and voting Republican. Any one of those catastrophes might have changed the upward line of my life to a flatter delineation, even pointing down, to where–if I remember correctly–some old girlfriends strongly and stridently suggested I go.

The reader can see I’m drifting. Lost the point of today. A successfully, albeit, accidentally, navigated past life is one to be savored, and one should sit back in The Chair and thank a great and all powerful God (of any denomination) for first, giving the gift of life, and second, not taking it away, prematurely. There were deaths in the past of those who did not deserve it, and were often too young to make sense of, but it was never me. I made it.

From that declaration, it’s an easy stroll to the idea of who helped, who made a difference, who cared…and maybe why? An English teacher’s casual remark to an 8th grader. A coaches push to do something different. An ex-girlfriend;s unintended, but hurtful comment. A young doctor willing to take a chance on an out-of-the box reconstruction of damaged body parts. An interesting best friend at the best time. A traffic cop willing to obey the rules of fraternity instead of the law.

I should stop, now and get to The Chair. No telling what else will bubble up, thanks to The Picture…

Yes, thanks.

OMG! Google The EPR Paradox

But only if you enjoy science. And mystery. And spookiness. And Puzzles. And want to be awed.

For nearly 60 years there has been a huge schism in scientific thought between Classical Physics (CP) and Quantum Mechanics (QM).

CP is the study of things we see and hear and touch, basically. Newton’s first law of motion, for example, paraphrased: a resting apple will not move until some force makes it move, like gravity to make it fall from a tree or William Tell placing the apple on his son’s head. (PS google that story, when you get time.)

It is through CP we understand our world, and invent things to make life easier, faster, and deadlier.

But as scientists drill deeper into the HOW of CP, the nuts and bolts, the Understanding Train goes a little off the rails. With the modern ability to see and measure sub-atomic particles, CP’s Laws tend to not apply to the world of QM with its Quarks and Qbits. In fact, the inhabitants of the QM world often act exactly the opposite of what the CP “laws” predict. One of the most intriguing disparities is the aptly named “Quantum Entanglement” (QE), a physical event so amazingly outside the CP Laws, Einstein called it “a spooky action at a distance”. Summarized for those without extensive scientific experience, “Quantum Entanglement” is when two different things (at the subatomic level or QBits’) communicate with each other over great distances with no known CP connection. In theory, but as yet unproven for obvious reasons, a pair of Qbits can theoretically communicate instantly when one is locked in a safe in Omaha and the other is embedded in Orion’s Belt. I’ll wait while you ponder Orion’s Belt is 800 LIGHT YEARS away.

QE has been proven in labs, but is hard to prove in the real world due to Schrodinger’s Cat issues and thre are no subatomic measuring devices on Mintaka (google it). If this phenomenon is true, it makes a mockery of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity notion about the speed of light (186,282 miles per second) being the fastest speed in the universe, which could change all the ways we calculate space and time. Orion’s Belt 800 LIGHT YEARS away can be reached instantly by two, communicating Qbits. In case you didn’t know it, one light years is 6 TRILLION MILES!

To revisit a past column: I am awe struck. Astounded. Amazed. and still trying to learn more. QE and the whole subatomic world, are Matrix-like mysteries, and have given rise to theories about the very nature of existence. Yay.

I sure hope they get some answers before I fly off into the beyond…or will I…?

PS Thank God for the internet…the smart parts…

Fight!

Political discourse has never been known for its intellectual component, if there ever was any, but the last eight years have seen a bi-partisan push to the highest level of asininity. Please look up the definition of that word so you can appreciate its fulsomeness. Look up that word, too.

I was old enough to know about John Kennedy and the 1960 election but not mature enough to understand what happened. It looked like a good-looking, well-spoken, war hero was elected, narrowly defeating a sweating, ill-mannered Nixon. It wasn’t apparent how mad Kennedy’s win made some people until that anger revealed itself on November 22, 1963. When another Kennedy was assassinated, as well as certain Civil Rights leaders, it was clear politics in the 1960’s was more than voting.

We’ve seen much of the same dangerous political anger in the last 10 years. Why?

There are many cultural and societal reasons, but one aspect in particular is adding gas to the fire: Political Rhetoric. There have been many fiery political figures through the years, but in general, politicians talked and acted civil, even courteous at times, even when they were insulting their opponent. “My esteemed and dear friend from the other side of the aisle is talking out his ass”, is kind of the way debate went. William F. Buckly, for example, made castigating Liberals a sport, not a brawl and he was answered, bon mot for bon mot, by Liberal Gore Vidal.

And, in watching political discourse for over 60 years, there did appear to be a reluctance on the part of all speakers to look like an idiot. That reluctance appears to have been replaced by an eagerness to proudly wear the label.

Anyone who knows politics knows governing America is a compromise negotiated by two, distinctly different ideologies: Liberals and Conservatives. Running the country takes Compromise. Dealing. Horse trading. Bickering. Debating,

When did we start electing politicians who will “FIGHT!”? I haven’t researched its past, but don’t we often teach our children fighting doesn’t solve anything? Supporters of both parties will hem and haw the “fighting” they are talking about is not…fighting, fighting, but, well, what, then? And why even say it?

“I will fight for you if elected!” Ugh. Idiots.

I don’t want a fighter in congress, or the presidency. Do you?

A sad side effect is the lone wolf gunman, stewing in his basement with his 15 guns, finally reaching a point where the only option left is to fight. Wonder where he/she/them got the idea?

Contentment…Awe…Happiness…Grace…

A friend sent a link to a discussion on Awe, (google Dr. Dacher Keltner for more).

It reminded me of my essay about talking to the tree: it was so old, so big, so majestic…it was awe inspiring.

It’s hard to remember all that’s written, but somewhere in past essays I’ve explained my life has moments of grace, which is a form of awe and close relative to contentment and it’s older brother, happiness. A family of deep, rich, feelings one is truly blessed to experience.

But…doesn’t everyone have these experiences? More particularly, doesn’t every OLD person have these experiences? They seem to be coming with greater frequency, as if compensation for The Calamities. Is that happening to everyone, else?

It’s doubtful. Most of my older conversational partners are trapped in mindsets longing for the good old times, a way out of the times they are in, or a way to numb themselves to what they know is to come.

Sidebar: a religious article this morning led me to ponder an old question: if you are truly righteous and believe in an afterlife, why not get there as soon as possible? Why wait? And it’s not just Christianity.

Related to the Fraternity Of Good Feelings, is The Sorority of Sad Feelings. (Not a sexist insult, simply an artistic attempt at humor. Sue me.) As noted last week, a very sad day visited but left in time to not ruin the next. It was an odd bum-rush of a feeling I used to kind of enjoy when younger. If you belong to the school of Context and Perspective, sadness helps describe and enhance happiness/contentment. How do we recognize one if the other never exists?

Another sidebar? It may be the exercise I’m doing here, right, now, is part of the reason for lower levels of sadness and higher levels of undefinable Good Feelings.

One of the things Dr. Keltner mentions in his podcast is the gratefulness he feels for how his parents raised him. For my entire life I have felt the opposite. Farm life was hard. My father was not perfect. My mother was. Maybe it’s time to stop blaming them for a life I seem to enjoy so much, now. (Oh, God, Not Nature vs. Nuture, again.)

Look. Seriously, look. For some reason sunsets and sunrises have to be photographed. I have to listen to hours of Jackson Browne. Trees talk to me. I love The Chair. And Buffalo Chicken Pizza. And…

It’s easier to find reason to be content, to be awed, than to sit and absorb the reasons to angry, sad, resentful.

Just look….

Comfort Zone vs Intellectual Curiosity

The Comfort Zone (CZ) has been talked about a lot, recently. A Major League hitter looking for a pitch in “his comfort zone”. A politician setting up soft interviews so he can stay in “his comfort zone”. But what is a CZ, really? Lets ask google: “a psychological state in which things are close and familiar to a person and under their control, enabling low level of stress and anxiety.”

Now this from google about Intellectual Curiosity (IC): “a genuine interest in learning about a wide variety of topics and ideas.”

Does it appear to you, readers, CZ is the opposite of IC? Can IC and CZ coexist?

It is logical CZ can be a dangerous place, despite its definition. A cave man in his CZ after eating a rack of mastodon ribs, might not realize the aroma of his meal will lure sabre tooth tigers for an epicurean investigation of their own. In this case, IC tigers will affect the CZ of the caveman.

In analyzing successful contentmentors (sic, and pronounced content mentors) in my own unscientific way, most seem content because of something learned, investigated or revealed to them. In my essay, good Customer Service was an example. Contentment was introduced, accepted, and enjoyed. Yay. But it was a process of intellectual acrobatics, and the resulting CZ was free of outside tigers.

Plainly, there is nothing wrong with a properly investigated and supported CZ. But it is the result of active and purposeful IC. Modern politics is an example of improperly constructed CZs unnecessarily resulting in Tribe Over Truth (TOT). How many Democrats/Liberals watch Fox News? How many Republicans/Conservatives watch MSN? Everyone knows the answer. When talking with a conservatives I usually get the Fox News spiel, and when questioned, my conversational partner suddenly realizes he/she/them is/are being lured outside their CZ, and retreats to a “lower level of stress and anxiety”. It is probably the same for Liberals when questioned by good, IC Conservatives.

A conclusion: we cannot be IC with out leaving our CZ. Why?

A purposely blunt statement regarding the good of this country and our future: Blow up your political CZ! Don’t be a caveman inviting tigers to eat our future.

If it helps any, politician know all about IC-resistant CVs, and how to take advantage. All of them know. Let’s get THEM out of their CZs. Let us be the Tigers.

Blessings…really

I am of an advanced age and pretty much remember lots of stuff. Whether the memory is true or not, might never be able to proven. But those memories help a lot.

One of the things we all deal with is the occasional lack of focus, followed by the “Now what do I do?” question. Young people often use the old chestnut “I’m bored.” As thinking human beings, we then add activity to give us meaning or keep us from getting the old chestnut. Once, I spent an entire summer in a small, empty college town for the solitude. Ugh. There was a bar…

So where is the blessing from the title?

In 2023 I was afflicted with what I’ve come to call “The Calamities”. After a vigorous, active life free from major health issues, my apparent lifetime ration of health problems arrived all at once after age 71, as if they had been stored someplace waiting for the right time. The Calamities upended everything and even caused an immigration from the too-warm South to the hopefully not-too-cold North. Hey, just found a blessing: I moved in the spring and was here for the glorious, northern summer. Bad me, I sent many a pic back to friends when the southern heat topped 100 degrees. Bad me.

But the biggest blessing of all is the lack of down time for my brain. Since February of 2022 there have been tests, treatments, follow up tests, follow up treatments, and more follow up tests (for three afflictions), and financial issues to navigate. Even when I sit and recharge in The Chair, my mind never wonders what to do next, or what do I need to accomplish. No boring, wondering, empty time. Every second is spent on survival, including what happens if the treatments work and what happens if they don’t. And how much will it cost me. And where will I get the money. And…and..and…

When first arrived, I asked a friend where to volunteer. He asked me what could I do, what could I tolerate. We soon realized volunteering would have to wait for a better body and mind.

But I still did not suffer from lack of purpose or a lost way.

Plus, drum roll, there is a very big hope for the future…and that chance to volunteer.

How blessed is that?

Life…just wait a day…

Sorry about yesterday, but it illustrates, again, how life is–strange. I was sad.

Now, today, I’m not. There have been crises (Yes, that is correct) my entire life, as with most of us. For some reason, though, it’s hard to remember they will pass, life will go on, and often times better than before. If I wrote it on my hand it would wash off, so we’ll see how long it takes to forget if I write it here, because more crises are on the way. That’s life in our older days.

The two obvious differences between a young person crisis and an old person crisis is, one, the potential for a crisis is baked into old age as body parts fail, memory lapses, and young people get noisier. And, two, the time to recover. Much like investing, there is a time when you might not have enough time left make up what you lost. Youth is wasted on the young…

And there’s always the final crisis, the last trip to the hospital. When I worked with an aged population, they knew what going into a hospital meant: You didn’t always come out upright.

A lot of love has been lost in my life, and each time it was not as long as one might think before a new love took the old one’s place. But the recovery was helped by youthful vigor and activity, a “get right back on the horse” mentality. Besides not being able to mount anything now, there aren’t many horses my age around these parts, pardner.

Well, this turned into a complaint about old age, despite how hard I steered the other way. It isn’t wasted time, though, because we remember things better when we write them down. (Proof: See how often I remember that phrase?)

I’ll never, again, succumb to sadness during a crisis.

None, of you should, either.

Yeah. Right. Life, have at us.

Man…and Woman…Sigh…

A close, personal relationship just ended. It’s none of your business, but the mechanics of it might be: why is it so hard for men and women to communicate?

The Men from Mars and Women from Venus trope is tired, but true. A better example is the Black Box from management courses. It says we don’t talk to each other, we talk into a Black Box. And the other person doesn’t hear us, they hear what they take out of the Black Box. Is what is said into the Black Box what is heard FROM the Black Box? Very seldom…very, very, seldom.

My recent, personal issue is a text book example. It will be discussed here, in its simplest form, and you can fill in details, you’ve probably all been through the same thing…at some time.

A plan was designed to protect someone. Said “someone” did not understand The Plan. The Plan had to be implemented at a quicker pace due to The Calamities, and so was undertaken without the complete understanding of the “someone”.

The Plan has worked to (nearly) perfection for the “someone”, which makes the planner really happy.

But, sadly, the “someone” still doesn’t understand, and in fact, thinks less of The Plan now that it worked, than the “someone” did before. And thinks even less of the planner.

It’s an interesting dilemma. There is satisfaction The Plan worked, but sadness for the hatred it caused. It’s time for soul-searching. Time to understand what means most in life. Time to suck it up.

Worst of all, here is the only place to tell the story. Hope you don’t mind a really, personal entry. If anything humorous comes to mind, it may break the gloom of the previous stuff, but don’t count on it. Every time feeling sorry tries to hijack my mind, The Plan, and how good it is for “someone”…pleases me. It’s like a yo-yo.

“What we got here is…a failure to communicate. Some (women) you just can’t reach.”

The lessen learned which might be useless this late in life, is doing the right thing might not make you happy. And write stuff down. Use charts. Bullet points. Hand puppets. Anything to make the decisions in life can be successful…for both. But isn’t divorce/breaking up normally better for one than the other?

Whatever. Remember the Black Box. It’s part of your work life, private life, and news feeds. Kidding about the news feeds…maybe.

And apologies, again, for TMI, but there are others going through the same thing, kind of, maybe.

Life. You gotta love it.
